Hedgelaying

Left unmanaged, a hedgerow will continue to grow upwards and outwards and will eventually become a line of trees. A well-managed hedgerow is thick and bushy, pleasant to look at and a haven for wildlife. Led by a professional, a group of Friends set to work on the Mentmore Road hedges in January 2013 to make a start on returning some order to the overgrown vegetation, learning the technique of "pleaching". We undertook further sessions throughout the spring and continued in the autumn and winter 2013-14. You can read more about our efforts in the latest newsletter, and the ancient art of hedgelaying in general here.
These photos show our work in progress and some of the results (click a photo to enlarge). More Action Days are planned for early in 2016.
